To enable this, we must challenge the rigid frameworks that still shape healthcare careers, especially the NHS banding system. While intended to provide equity and clarity across professions and organisations, banding can inadvertently limit flexibility, creativity, and progression. Career development becomes boxed in by job descriptions, fixed funding criteria, and rigid organisational silos, leaving little room to grow sideways, explore new multi-dimensional roles, or lead differently in ways that reflect an individualโ€™s unique strengths.

Thatโ€™s why we must move beyond โ€œ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆโ€™๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ด ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ช๐˜ตโ€ and think across generations, not in silos of age or role, but in terms of shared capability, wisdom, and energy.

Each generation brings valuable assets that can help reshape whatโ€™s possible if we listen, collaborate, and design with intention:

๐— ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜€ (born 1980-94) value purpose. They seek collaborative environments, meaningful progression, and work-life integration. Theyโ€™re eager to lead, but want autonomy, not outdated hierarchies of yester-year.

๐—š๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ญ (born 1995 - 2012) expects openness, wellbeing support, and digital agility. Theyโ€™re not afraid to ask, โ€œWhy do we do it this way?โ€ and we should be listening to their solutions if we are to harness innovation and change.

Creating sustainable careers in radiography means building space for all of these perspectives. So let's start the conversation and shift from top-down structures to more human-centred, adaptable systems.
